A Day in Wells-next-the-Sea

Wells-next-the-Sea. Why not Wells-on-Sea? After all, there's Clacton-on-Sea and Holland-on-Sea. Then again there's Ramsgate and Margate, so why not just Wells? (Except that I think Wells exists somewhere not near the sea.)

Anyway, it's a lovely village, made more interesting because it's tidal. I always find it odd to see boats moored where there's no water - which you can see in the fourth picture. And the tide comes in so quickly, it's almost like a fast moving river. Couldn't help but think of Otis Redding on the dock of the bay "watching the tide roll away".  If he'd been watching it in Wells-next-the-Sea, it would have been a faster song.
